In 1862 Julius Meinl opened a spice shop in downtown Vienna, from which he sold cocoa, tea, spices, rice, sugar and green coffee beans. Over the 15 years that followed, Meinl painstakingly researched the coffee roasting process, and developed a revolutionary method that meant that the coffee beans no longer came in to contact with the gases from the coal. For the first time, coffee was made with no after-taste, whilst retaining its rich natural aroma.

By 1913, the company had expanded and moved to their new headquarters on the later re-named Julius Meinl-Gasse, where they remain to this day. By this point Julius Meinl had become the largest coffee roaster of the Austro-Hungarian Empire, and the largest coffee and tea importer in Central Europe.

Following the opening of their flagship Vienna store selling premium food and beverage, Julius Meinl launched their classic collection of roasted, ready to serve packaged coffee beans. The Präsident and Jubiläum beans form the basis of the modern-day Julius Meinl range, which now extends to a plethora of traditional and contemporary coffee flavours in bean, ground and even capsule form.
